Today is July 13 again and it’s that time of the year again. He’s probably 23 now which is almost the same age as me. Coolness! (Thanks to petit_ange who commented in last year’s post.) For the uninitiated, Li Syaoran is a character from the popular anime and manga Cardcaptor Sakura. I took his first name for the name of this website, in case you didn’t notice.
Cardcaptor Sakura was THE ONE thing that started my interest on the internet and everything on the web. I remember managing my first real website, not like the one which you were asked by your computer teacher to create on Geocities, but the one where people you don’t know actually visit your site. Back then, I didn’t have internet access at home so I was a frequent customer of internet shops. I don’t think many webmasters could say that they have experienced managing a website without having their own internet connection at home. So in that respect, you could say that I was really passionate about this show.
So why Syaoran and not Sakura for my site’s name? Well there are a lot of obvious reasons like firstly, it would be awkward having a girly domain for a guy. (Duh!) Also, there are tons of sites already with the name Sakura which have nothing to do with CCS since it’s a common Japanese name. Using Syaoran’s name was far better because it was unique. But more importantly, I liked Syaoran’s character in the anime. Not many people I know personally may agree (I have no idea why), but I saw myself in his character so that’s one big reason why I enjoyed this show. (Tsubasa Syaoran kinda sucks though because of his hugely different personality from CCS Syaoran.)
So there are actually two Syaorans in the anime/manga world. The one celebrating his birthday today is the original Syaoran from the CCS anime. While the Syaoran in the Tsubasa Chronicle series has his birthday the same as Sakura which is on every 1st of April. I celebrate both of course.
Usually, I buy a cake for events like this but unfortunately with my current financial condition, this year would be a cake-less birthday for CCS Syaoran.
So let me recycle last year’s cake for him just for the sake of this blog post…
There you go. Hopefully next year I won’t be in this same situation of not being able to buy a cake. Oh, and if you still don’t get why anyone would buy a cake for a fictional character, don’t think about it too much. Because you’ll probably never understand it anyway. ^_^
Cheers to another year of blog posts in Syaoran’s Journal!
