Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – Movie Review
SM North Edsa IMAX Theatre – My Early Thoughts
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will premiere in Philippine theaters on July 16, 2009 (Thursday). Unlike in the U.S., both SM IMAX theaters (MOA and SM North) will premiere the Harry Potter film the same day as regular 35mm theaters will. The movie’s opening sequence, approximately 12 minutes, has been converted to IMAX 3D format. The total running time of the film is 2 hours and 44 minutes.

You can no longer reserve HP6 tickets by phone. Just head on to the Harry Potter booth in front of Cinema 6 and you will be assisted in choosing a seat and paying for the ticket by one of their personnel. The booth is located near the bridge connecting The Block and the City Center/main building.

Ticket price is 400.00 pesos. This is IMAX so remember that it’s best not to get a seat near the front rows! Mall of Asia’s IMAX has rows from A to P while SM North only has up to row O. My seats are in the M row at SM North Edsa. ^_^
Here are the “tentative” schedules of the two IMAX theaters during the first week of Half-Blood Prince’s screening. It’s interesting to note that they have already removed Transformers 2 after what? Just 3 weeks? Click for larger image.

SM North Edsa IMAX schedule from July 16 (Thursday) to July 19 (Sunday)
First screening is 10:25 AM – Last screening is 11:45 PM
This will be the first movie of SM North Edsa’s IMAX theater. Currently, Ayala’s Trinoma mall is the highest grosser of box-office movies in the country. (Some time ago, SM North Edsa used to hold that record.) But by opening a new IMAX theater, SM could pose some tough competition to Ayala’s front-running theaters.
I’m a bit wary however on how this new IMAX will compare to the one in Mall of Asia. Compared to MOA’s 600-seat IMAX theater, SM North’s would most likely seat only around 400 people. The old Cinema 12 of SM North cannot possibly house a traditional IMAX screen so this one would be a few meters less tall than the one in MOA. Also, unlike the one in MOA which uses film reels, SM North’s IMAX will have its movies saved on a hard disk. Not that we actually care about that!
The screen size difference though has sparked some controversy in the U.S. In all honestly, I could hardly care less about the size as long as the experience is not sacrificed and the price is still worth it. I’d really like to see SM North’s IMAX become a success so I won’t have to go all the way to the south for an IMAX experience. (I live practically right behind SM North so that’s why!)

I got tickets for the first screening! Yay! xD

P.S. I’m a Harry Potter fan so this is the only IMAX movie that will get coverage here.
P.P.S. This movie’s gonna rock my socks off!
