New “The Last Airbender” promo pic with the 4 elements!

At last, we get to see some of the main characters in one promo picture! I’m trying to keep an open mind with this film adaptation of my favorite animated show that’s why I’m happy to hear any sort of news on it. This promo image looks kinda rough on the edges though so I doubt if this will ever be used officially. (Click on the pic for the larger image.)

We’ve already seen Aang (Noah Ringer) airbending in the teaser so nothing new from him here. His chubby cheeks is still blatantly obvious there though. Yeah, I still can’t get over with the fact that his facial features doesn’t match Aang’s.  :-S

We’ve seen pictures of Zuko (Dev Patel) but this is the first time we see him in that outfit with huge flames around him. I’m still kind of disappointed that they completely changed the Firebender costumes. And is that a spear behind him? Okay, if they’re gonna add that they better make sure he’s gonna look skilled in using it. Otherwise, he could be making a fool of himself with that. I wonder if the Blue Spirit will ever make an appearance on the film though. If yes, they’ll need to train him with double swords too.

Katara and Sokka, our favorite Water Tribe characters! Katara (Nicola Peltz) looks stunning so I’m having some doubts about her pairing with Aang. Hope they look good together on-screen. No hair loopies for Katara this time which is just fine since she already looks pretty here.

Katara Movie and TV Compared

Sokka Movie and TV Compared

Sokka (Jackson Rathbone) on the other hand looks nothing like the show’s Sokka. They are probably pushing this guy to create fangirls. I just hope he’s a fun Sokka although I still think a brown-skinned actor would have looked better for the part.

The waterbending effects there look like they were done using MS Paint or maybe it’s just because of the quality of this picture. But I like Katara’s stance here so I’m confident she can pull off the moves adequately. And what’s this? Where the hell is Sokka’s boomerang? We don’t need another character with a staff!  :x

The Earth element is the mysterious part of this promo. Obviously, that’s the city of Omashu in the background. But who is the Earthbender? Common sense would tell us that it has to be Bumi but IMDB doesn’t list that character in the cast. There’s this Earthbending Father character though played by a certain Keong Sim. I have a feeling they are going to completely cut off the Aang and Bumi subplot. As much as I like Bumi, it’s one of the things that could be cut for time constraints. That’s gonna be one less funny character though which sucks because this film is getting more and more serious compared to the TV show.

“The Last Airbender” is set to be released in theaters on July 2010.

  5. You know, I was also sad before about the casting of Zuko and Aang. But I’ve come to realize that the color of their skin is not as important as their acting skills and how they will all look together on-screen. If the production team thinks they’ve got the right actors for the roles, then I’m okay with whatever they have: Caucasian or not.

I also think that most of the characters in the show have almost-white complexions anyway. Of course, with the exception of the Water Tribe people. :)
