A Merry Trans-Siberian Christmas!

A Merry Trans-Siberian Christmas!

100 days before Christmas 2011 - WolframAlpha

100 days to go before Christmas! Thanks to the incredibly amazing WolframAlpha for helping with the computation.

And on that note, let me share one of my favorite Christmas tunes from the American rock band Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

This is “O Come All Ye Faithful / O Holy Night”, the opening performance from their Christmas concert movie “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve”.

I fell in love with this song right from the first time I’ve heard it. Who would’ve thought that “O Holy Night” could sound this awesome on electric guitars?

That’s my favorite song (or medley rather) from TSO’s Christmas film but there are plenty of other great tracks in it.

Here’s “Christmas Canon”.

Merry Christmas! ^_^

Happy Birthday Mama Mary!

Happy Birthday Mama Mary!

because through the Mother of God, the entire human race was renewed,
and the sorrow of the first mother, Eve, was transformed into joy.”

~ St. John Damascene

“Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.”

“If you invoke the Blessed Virgin when you are tempted, she will come at once to your help, and Satan will leave you.”
~ St. John Vianney

“If you ever feel distressed during your day — call upon our Lady — just say this simple prayer: ‘Mary, Mother of Jesus, please be a mother to me now.’
I must admit — this prayer has never failed me.”
~ Blessed Mother Teresa

“If anyone does not wish to have Mary Immaculate for his Mother, he will not have Christ for his Brother.”
~ St. Maximilian Kolbe

“She is more Mother than Queen.”
~ St. Therese of Lisieux

In a great although unsurprising outpouring of love for the Blessed Mother, Filipinos made “Happy Birthday Mama Mary” the (true) #1 trending topic at Twitter today, September 8.

In line with this, I published a pertinent article at The Bookish Pinoy sharing GKC’s inspiring essay with the title “Mary and the Convert”.

Also, here’s a music video for “Ave Maria”, one of the popular Marian hymns. This version is by David Archuleta and is taken from his Christmas album.

Ooberfuse at World Youth Day 2011

Ooberfuse at World Youth Day 2011

So World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid just ended and naturally, it was a huge success!

72920I am extremely moved to read about all the great things that happened there. It did sadden me to hear the bad things but let us not allow ourselves to dwell on the things which are not of God.

It’s comforting to know that many young adults around the world do realize the beauty and value of the Catholic faith. And because I’m still feeling kind of down for not being able to go there, let me share two great songs from the event.

Ooberfuse is a London-based electro-pop band composed of Hal, Cherrie, Alex and Michel. They have two songs for World Youth Day 2011.

image

The band’s female vocalist Cherrie Anderson happens to be a Filipino!

Here’s the first song titled “Faith In You”. It’s one of the seven winning songs for WYD 2011. It got the highest number of plays (400,405) on the contest’s website.

I like Cherrie’s voice, the melody and how the music is mixed in this song. Great message too! The theme for WYD 2011 is:
“Rooted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the Faith” (cf. Colossians 2:7)

Listen to Cherrie Anderson talk about this song and their band here.

Their other song “Unshakeable” has a more distinguishable electro-pop sound.

Ooberfuse hasn’t released an official video yet but there’s a fan video by Cool Catholics.

It’s definitely a catchy song. I like how it ends with a fade-out scream of “God!” Hehe.

However, I’m no longer as excited about this type of worship/church music as I used to. I’m learning to appreciate the more traditional Catholic music now. I’m currently into Taizé music, for example. This is why I like the first song better. I’m no curmudgeon but I feel uncomfortable when they play songs during Mass that sound nearly like “contemporary pop”. I wish they’d keep the solemnity of the Holy Mass more often and… that’s a topic for another blog post.

You can download these two songs for free at Ooberfuse’s WYD 2011 page.

OneRepublic AOL Sessions!

OneRepublic AOL Sessions!

I think this marks the first time I’ve dedicated a blog post for this band. Well, it’s long overdue because I’ve been enjoying their music for almost two years now so I think a bit of my personal history with them is in order.

onerepublic aol sessions - secrets

When OneRepublic came out with “Apologize”, I didn’t really took much notice of them. I was never really into that song before. (Perhaps Timbaland ruined it for me?)

I only began to really notice them after learning that most of the big pop hits such as Beyonce’s “Halo”, Leona Lewis’s “Bleeding Love”, Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone” and Jordin Spark’s “Battlefield” were produced by Ryan Tedder, OneRepublic’s lead vocalist. I thought… this guy’s a genius!

So I started to really listen to OneRepublic’s music and I was hooked! Admittedly, I have not yet truly listened to their first album and I intend to wait until I get hold of a copy of the CD. The real physical album not just a download. I take music seriously like that.

Still, I first heard their second album through a downloaded copy. Shame on me. But after getting mesmerized by their music, I resolved to get a real copy of the album. The chance came last Christmas 2010. I announced to my officemates that I’d like OneRepublic’s CD as my Christmas gift.

onerepublic - waking up (cd picture)

Ever since I discovered OneRepublic’s music, I scoured the web for any live performances I could get my hands on then burned them on DVDs. The Down the Front acoustic version of “Secrets” has to be one of the most beautiful performances ever posted on YouTube. And now, OneRepublic has outdone themselves with these AOL Sessions performances.

OneRepublic – Secrets (AOL Sessions)

The ever-amazing cello and gut-busting drum work here makes this the best live performance of this song. I don’t get the criticisms on the violin part. If anything, I think the violin solo is a little too short because I felt wanting more of it. Ryan Tedder may not have the greatest male vocals out there but there’s a certain quality to his voice that I just find to be exceptional. It doesn’t bother me at all that his live singing differs slightly from his studio vocals.

OneRepublic – All The Right Moves (AOL Sessions)

For some reason, I hear this song in the airwaves more often than “Secrets”. This bothers me because it’s really the lesser song in my opinion. The repetitive words hindered me from liking this song for a long time. But this AOL Sessions performance has now cemented the fact that it is really a great song. In some ways, it is musically more engaging than the “Secrets” performance.

OneRepublic – Apologize (AOL Sessions)

As I said, I was not a big fan of this song while it was still on the charts. I started to like it a little bit when they sang it in the American Idol Season 7 finale with David Archuleta. I was already admiring David’s vocal skills that time. Years later, I watched that performance again and cried like a fangirl upon seeing my two favorite performers singing together on the same stage.
Anyway, I now love this song and this AOL Sessions rendition is probably the best live version of the song out there. The blending of the cello and piano here will leave anyone utterly speechless.

OneRepublic – Stop and Stare (AOL Sessions)

It feels great to know that there’s still a side to OneRepublic that I haven’t fully explored yet. I will tackle the first album once the second album has grown old on me which amazingly hasn’t happened yet. But yes, I do love “Stop and Stare”. This is an electrifying performance of the song and I love how Ryan ends it in a high note, literally.

I wanted to also see them perform “Good Life” but I guess they’ve already performed that song numerous times recently. Fair enough.

My top 2 favorite contemporary artists have already performed at AOL Sessions! Previously, I’ve been watching David Archuleta’s AOL Sessions on repeat and now I have OneRepublic too. Download the 1080p videos while it’s still available on YouTube!

I missed David Archuleta’s concert here this year but if OneRepublic ever comes to the Philippines, you can bet I’ll be among the first in line to buy tickets!

Ngayong Pasko Magniningning ang Pilipino

Ngayong Pasko Magniningning ang Pilipino

Ngayong Pasko Magniningning ang Pilipino

*In keeping with the essence of the song, this article is written in Filipino language.

Performed by: Gary Valenciano and Toni Gonzaga (feat. UST Choir)

Download MP3
Time: 5:30 – Size: 7 MB – 200 kbps VBR

P.S.
Ang hirap talaga magsulat sa Tagalog. You’d really think it’s easy if you haven’t tried it. Pansinin nyo ang dami ng “quotes” na ginamit ko. So, kudos to all bloggers out there who write mainly in Tagalog! Now I have another thing to add to my New Year resolutions list.
;)

A Fanboy Meets David Archuleta at SM Skydome

A Fanboy Meets David Archuleta at SM Skydome

Needless to say, I still can’t get over the fact that I actually met and shook hands with the one and only David Archuleta himself.

ArchieInManila02ap11-10

This isn’t the first time I’ve blogged about him. I’ve followed this kid ever since his American Idol days. I even wrote about my thoughts on his AI finale night last 2008.

I liked his first album but I still think that not releasing “My Hands” as a single is the biggest mistake they did with that album. My own biggest mistake is not seeing his first concert here in Manila with David Cook! To cope with the misery, I downloaded and burned to a CD his AOL Sessions performances. This kid sounds even better live! You really have to see and hear him to believe it. Check out “My Hands” and “A Little Too Not Over You” live performances from AOL Sessions.

I’ve been a bit late in hearing his new album “The Other Side of Down” which was released just last month. But in just a few weeks, I already managed to know all the words to his new songs. So yeah, I guess I’m one of the few guys at the Skydome who unashamedly sang along to each one of David’s songs as they blared out of the speakers.

David Archuleta - The Other Side of Down

David’s music is a gem. It’s positive, uplifting and often inspiring. It’s truly a breath of fresh air considering the kind of music we hear on the radio today. There’s not a single bad song in his new album. Each one has the potential to be a chart-topping pop hit. So it’s no wonder it’s been on repeat in my player for weeks now and my Last.fm profile would prove that!

This long-time fan of pop music and the 5-star reviewers can’t be all wrong. So if you like good pop music, give David’s new album a listen. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

I know a lot of fans already uploaded their own videos of the event. But I thought I’d still contribute mine for posterity’s sake. Here’s the complete and full live performance of David Archuleta at SM North EDSA Skydome last November 17, 2010. The whole concert is less than 15 minutes so I didn’t have to break it down into parts.

Performances:
“Elevator” (acoustic)
“Crush” (piano)
“Something ‘Bout Love” (acoustic)

What’s amazing about David is that he’s so versatile. He can sing just about any kind of song and he still sounds great. I love how he changes his singing of a song to make it different from the album version. There are times when I even prefer the live version more than the one on his CD.

Also, David’s one of the few pop acts today who doesn’t have to resort to gimmicks to get noticed. He has pure vocal talent which is the only thing that matters anyway.

waiting for david archuleta Waiting for David Archuleta

Before the concert, they kept on announcing that only the first 400 buyers will get their CDs signed. I was still at work when my sister called and told me that they no longer had any VIP tickets available at 2 PM! Turns out that legions of Archie’s fans waited early in the morning.

After the concert, the VJ repeated that only 400 would be signed. But because we live just practically behind SM North, my sister and I weren’t in a hurry to leave. So we decided to wait. I just sat there watching my sister together with other fans pleading with the guards to let them in. Over thirty minutes probably had passed when I started thinking that it was getting hopeless.

so near yet so far So near yet so far…

Many people had already left too. And so I prayed. I told God, “Is it too much to ask Lord? David’s already here. So near and yet so far. Please let even just my sister in then I’d be happy already.”

In just a few minutes after saying my prayers, I saw a few fans running to the right side of the Skydome. They were letting all the remaining fans inside to get their CDs signed too! And contrary to previous rules, they will allow the first album to be signed as well.

I couldn’t get the plastic off the first album so in my exasperation I just tore it out using my teeth! My sister and I stood in line with bated breath as we await our turn.

meeting david archuleta at last At last!

No taking of pictures were allowed with David. That’s a huge bummer but we’ll take it. At least we’re meeting him in person.

My sister went first with the second album and she didn’t say anything to David. My turn came. David said “Hi!” with a smile and I returned the greeting. He signed the album and I didn’t say a thing while he was doing that because I know how difficult it is to get your attention divided when you’re writing something.

david archuleta - the other side of down CD signed

david archuleta first CD album signed

After signing it, David held out his hand and I shook it. Smiling I said my thanks and left. We were led out of the Skydome immediately so I didn’t have another chance to take more shots.

Maybe because we were both shocked at finally meeting an international superstar, the thought of waiting for David to see him leave never crossed our mind. We went to order some food first at Sandwich Guy then left for home. On the way, I took a picture of my sister with the huge David poster at the side of the old grocery building.

My camera’s battery got depleted right after taking this so it was the last shot of the day.

It’s been three days and I’ve had time to reflect on the positive effect this experience had on me. David is definitely an inspiration to many young people out there (including me). He’s a good guy who has great faith in God and who genuinely loves what he does. And he doesn’t fall short in showing his appreciation to all his fans. The 400-fan limit was probably announced only in case David gets tired of signing. But I applaud him for showing a sincere smile to every fan there even after signing the first 400. It’s hard to find popular people nowadays who are genuinely as good-hearted as David.

david archuleta 2011 promo calendar Got a free 2011 promo calendar for buying David’s first album

I didn’t say anything to David when I faced him. Something which I’m regretting now. Why? Compared to the number of girls who lined up for him, guys are a definite minority. And I would have liked to have told David what a guy thinks of his album since he’s one too anyway. So here’s what I would have said:

“Hi David. I like your second album even more. All the songs are great but I think you should consider releasing My Kind of Perfect as a single. Many guys would be able to relate to the message and it’s a really nice song.” *handshake* “Thanks for coming here and I hope you come back for a full concert.”

So why didn’t I say this? Well, the fact that I’m generally a shy person should probably be enough explanation. But the bigger reason was that I didn’t want to take any more of David’s time. I consider it a huge miracle to even get the opportunity to meet him. Imagine signing 400 CDs only to later find out that there’s more. It’s exhausting and he even hinted during the concert that it’s “hot” inside the Skydome. But of course, part of me still wishes I said the above words. It wouldn’t even take 15 seconds to say those anyway. *sigh*

Regardless, David has inspired me to work even harder for my dreams and trust more in God. And this experience only reinforced in me (again!) my sort of motto in life:

“Good things come to those who wait.”

This is a lesson people would do well to remember in our world today where everything believed to be good has to be “instant”. Heck, even plants need time to grow. But I digress. :D

Oh, and I never knew that David also has a book!

david archuleta - chords of strength

And because I’m The Bookish Pinoy, you can bet I’ll have this in my bookshelf soon or on my Kindle. :D

Meeting David Archuleta in person is definitely one of the best things to happen to me this year and an experience I will never forget. Keep up the great work Archie! I am definitely looking forward to your concert here next year (hopefully!).

A Good, Good Life

A Good, Good Life

Well, well, well. So what do you think about the idea of having a blog and not updating it for months? I guess no blogger in his right mind would think this was a good idea but frankly, I don’t regret doing it. The only thing I probably regret is the fact that I’m paying for this!

But whatever, it’s already happened. And this post as you can probably tell is my poor attempt at returning to this blogging thing. Let me confess though that it’s taken every ounce of my will to open WriteMonkey and type this thing up. Procrastination, definitely, is the writer’s worst enemy.

A lot of things happened and not the least of which is my adventure at UST last month. But for now, I’ll focus on only 3 subjects: books, movies and music.

Books

Contrary to what some people might think, I still read. I mean, read books.  The book blog I spent weeks to build last year was definitely no mere whim. This short attention span really is just the root cau…

new books 2010 - part 1

Wait, where was I again? Oh yeah, the books. Just head on over to my “mega update” to see the 46 books I’ve acquired as of September 30. Only up to that date because I had already bought 2 new books just less than a week after publishing that update.

Movies

Saw quite a number of movies too but obviously I don’t have the time anymore to write reviews so…

how to train your dragon - toy story 3 - inception - despicable me

How To Train Your Dragon 3D – 10/10
Toy Story 3 – 10/10
Inception 3D – 10/10
Despicable Me – 7/10
The Last Airbender – 0/10

You really can’t help but hate that last movie for ruining a great streak. I didn’t really watch it at the cinema but even seeing that mess on a pirated DVD was still one of my most disappointing experiences this year. Made a mental note not to watch any more of Shyamalan.

*dies*

Seriously, this is gonna be the best movie ever!
And the best news to come out of WB recently? No 3D gimmicks! Yeah!

Music

I’ve been listening to mostly 80s and 90s music for the past several months which means I had generally ignored today’s music. If you could call that music. *snorts*
Alright, I’m coming clean. Of course, I do listen to a few new tunes and this is what led me to discover a new favorite album and artist. In fact, I borrowed the title of this post from one of their songs.

You might have heard this already before. It’s featured on the trailer of that book-to-movie adaptation “Eat Pray Love” and on a number of American TV shows too like One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl. And it’s not even a single yet!

I only semi-liked OneRepublic’s songs before. In fact, I’ve always thought “Apologize” was a tad overrated. However, their latest album “Waking Up” is just superb! OneRepublic may not be as popular anymore here as they once was but their new album definitely deserves to be better promoted.

It’s distressing to hear what most maintream artists nowadays pass as music when you’ve got artists like OneRepublic hardly getting any attention here.  By attention, I mean the kind of music you frequently see now on the charts.

I used to listen only to dance music and remixes but today, almost everything sounds like club music! It’s really annoying how they all sound the same. Maybe I’m just getting old? Hm… Nah!

Anyway, if you like to hear music like they used to make it just a few eons ago, give OneRepublic’s latest album “Waking Up” a listen. Even the title track alone is worth getting the whole album itself. They’ll have your ears opened to true musical talent. Enough of that electronic dancey stuff!

The Good Life

I will write about the UST talk in a few days. Like REALLY in a few days. I really, really want to be writing regularly again.
And the book blog will slowly but surely come back to life. I just bought a new book light and I’d like to write a review for that.
I’m sure there’s plenty of other stuff I could write on these blogs. You can never really run out of ideas when you’re living The Good Life™. We are god of stories so please, tell me-e-e-e, what there is to complain about? :D
