Explore Davao - Part 2 : Taj minar

Part 2 and 3 covers one day only - June 8, 2008 which was a Sunday. From bars to skyriding, it was undoubtedly an eventful day and rightly deserves two long, detailed posts. Here’s the first one.

We just came from our grocery shopping that Saturday night when our boss called and told us to go to Damosa Gateway. We arrived there lugging our shopping bags and looking really stupid carrying them inside a bar (of all places!).

Half of me didn’t want to stay there a minute longer because I knew they were bound to ask me to drink and I DON’T. But then I found out that there was a DJ mixing live! Wow! It’s been a while since the last time I’ve seen one in person! The last time was during the Etelecare Christmas Party at the World Trade Center last December which coincided with my birthday. I will never forget that night not just because of the mixshow or my birthday or my ugly pimples but for several other reasons which I can’t explain here. I’ve got pictures from that night of my most memorable birthday to date here.

Going back to the bar, I remember having this strong urge to come up to him and ask what stuff he uses to do what he does, how much do they cost, where can I buy them, etc. It was obviously my chance to actually see how even an amateur DJ does mixing. I never had that chance before. But then, the usual wimpy me did not even dare move an inch closer to his turntable! There was an old man however who did approach him to check on what he’s doing. But I could see the guy was not really into mixshows so I deduced he was just one curious fellow who had nothing better to look at. And as if God really wanted me to be bold for a change, I was given another opportunity that night. You see, there were ladies dancing inside the bar and outside the bar. There was some contest to find the best bellydancer. One of the bar’s dancers joined the contest and I think the DJ knows her personally so he went out to watch. That left me free to go to his booth! So I was thinking…

“It won’t take a minute. I could just take a quick shot with my cam and look at the pics later. But then what if he sees me? He was just a few feet away and still had a good view of the bar’s interior. I certainly don’t have a script ready if he catches me drooling on his stuff!”

I kept looking at the turntable then to the DJ and back. I’ve never been so torn before in my life until that moment. I was torn between my pride and my desire to see DJ equipment up close. I could have just summoned up the courage to stand up, go to his booth and wait for him to return with the possibility of learning more about DJ mixshows - one of my life’s greatest passions. But regrettably, I didn’t. I took the cowardly path instead as so often I’ve done before in life. Experiences like this remind me how much I hate my unsociable nature. :((

And so I ended up spending the rest of the night taking these pictures while enjoying the music. I played with my digicam’s exposure as you may notice so pardon me for the abundance of laser lights and ghost images. There’s plenty of pictures too showing the amateur DJ. Hehe!

About the music, well I liked the choice of songs (so random… old and new hits spanning several genres) but the transitions were average at best. Hahaha! This coming from someone who just admitted knowing zilch on the art of DJ mixing.

Also, as you can see in one of the pics… I drank that night but only because they forced me to. But I think the debate inside my head also drove me into doing that… I was already verging on desperation. They said the drink was called “margarita” and I hated the salt bits. I think I downed 3 glasses of it that night. Hah! So much for being a non-drinker.

One thing worth noting is that this day is “The Day I Did Not Attend Sunday Mass”. Definitely a day I would not like to have again… EVER! There’s no match to hearing God’s Word on a Sunday. Even hearing the best mixshow on Earth doesn’t stand a chance.

(I’ll try to post Part 3 tomorrow. Skyriding! Woohoo!!)

Almost 3 weeks after that eventful night, we passed by the same bar after eating lunch. I noticed the poster outside and found out the name of the DJ.

Taj minar

Very cheeky… *smirk* My dream DJ name is definitely way better than that! It’s one of “My Biggest Secrets” though so I’m afraid you just have to take my word for it.  8)
